I bet that the differences in the code are not related to internal kernel organization. MS has focused on upgrading the desktop GUI over and over.

For example, the critical RPC flaw has been laying around for years. MS knew about it but did nothing for very long time. The same is true concerning flaws and vulnerabilities on its Internet apps.

So even if the code is a few years old, the kernel may haven't changed by much.
