I think you misunderstood...
Those who develop in Java want the "write once, run anywhere" goal maintained. (Or, at least, they want as close to that goal as is technically feasible.)

This increases the marketability and longevity of their code. It also gives market leverage to reduce costs (IBM against BEA, or either against 'open source').

Giving developers leeeway is good - as long as it does not interfere with the underlying goal.
