Actually rather than sidebars I have extra stuff on the bottom taskbar and I have a "topbar" (I guess that's what you'd call it). I do that for both Windows and KDE, although right now obviously there's more you can do with KDE. I particularly like the WMP applet for Windows, and I have various multimedia controls for KDE (one for amarok, another really nice one for volume control). The only thing I have on the Windows topbar right now are applinks because that's all it'll do, but on KDE I have the applinks plus applets. It's nice to have a weather bug that actually has useful information AND has no spyware.

And it's all small enough that it doesn't take much real estate. Though I guess it helps that I have good eyes.
