Novell did not "absolve" IBM of anything; as you stated quite clearly, there is no need to absolve IBM. Remember SCO and Novell are engaged in litigation, quite apart from SCO and IBM.

SCO has both sued Novell for slander of title, claiming that Novell has no right to contest SCO's copyright and has cancelled IBM's Unix license. Novell has countered by exercising the clause in that allows them to order specific action or to act in SCO's behalf, very effectively contradicting SCO's proprietary claim. IBM's is the only license SCO has cancelled, to my knowledge, and so it is the only cancellation Novell can override. The idea of Novell jumping to IBM's aid makes for great copy, but don't go pushing it beyond reasonable limits.
