IBM bought Novell (just like MS bought Novell), but ...
that still doesn't explain why neither Tarantula (the old Santa Cruz Operation that sold Unixware to Caldera/SCO) nor AT&T (the original public utility, heavily regulated owner of Unixware) have lifted so much as a finger to come to SCO's defense on this issue. And it does nothing to explain why Darl McBride's predecessor, Ransom Love, has gone on record saying that SCO is completely off the wall wrong on this issue. It was Ransom Love who bought Unixware in the first place, and if anyone should know what they bought, it should be Ransom Love. In light of these facts, IBM's investment in Novell will not carry a whole lot of weight. In fact it could easily be veiwed that Novell has a more powerful ownership interest in Unixware than SCO, since all of these things revolve around complex and convoluted contracts that are unique in the IT world. The plain fact of the matter is that the judge and jury are likely to go plain mad trying to figure the whole thing out (along with plenty of conflicting expert testamony) and the most likely result is that SCO will lose even whatever value of Unixware they now enjoy. With all these legally questionable contracts and agreements clutering the landscape, Unixware itself is very likely to end up in the public domain before it is through. This is why a lot of old Unix hands have viewed SCO's claims with deep suspicion from the very beginning.
