- It's most certainly not the Jet engine. Just like the previous version, SQL Express is simply the regular SQL engine scaled down to support smaller websites and applications that need a rich local database behind it. Happily, you can distribute with your application as part of the installer and use it in combination with commercial software completely free of charge (something you can't do with many of the alternatives like MySQL).
