I hope so...
I hope you are right, but I have a number concerns.

Firstly the hype surrounding XML may lead to pressure from marketing that they have to "embed" XML. Hopefully they just make the thing capable of generating XML and then remove this capability when the world at large realises how awful XML really is. I guess this will follow as soon as people start attempting anything remotely serious with Infopath; Visual Basic for applications and XML, truely a data management marriage made in hell.

Microsoft as a large company is a many headed monster with many competing groups and presumably the XML enthusiasts will fight their pitch even against rational arguments. Maybe Gates has to sack a few people from the Office team before they make their products adhere to the Longhorn way.

I hear that WinFS is based on SQL Server and SQL Server isn't really very relational. This doesn't make it different from other current SQL products but we should encourage Microsoft to go further in the right direction on this front.
