Open source is currently...
...working on an alternative that allows a choice to current Windows and Office users.

From public accounts, Longhorn looks different - way different. I don't see evidence of any open source project to try to be compatible with Longhorn (although, as they say, there's one in every crowd), because, frankly, there doesn't seem to be much incentive to be compatible with Longhorn. All the advance press just makes it look like a fat client, and that is something that cannot be sold to business even today, let alone a couple of years out. Maybe an attractive home entertainment box, I don't pretend to understand that market.

At least from the business perspective, I expect the open source desktop to follow a path roughly analogous to the desktop computer itself; first an amalgomation, then an evolution. And Longhorn can go wherever it is going.
