- No it is XML that is already obsolete
-
Look at it this way. XML is hierarchical. This is the same approach as used by old style CODASYL (pre-relational) databases and indeed by good old COBOL file descriptions.
The problem is that most real word data structures are not hierarchical. For example y?u can express the relationship between an order and an order line in a hierarchy in an XML <ocument. However each order line is also related to a product and how will you access the data by product over multiple orders? With XML as with COBOL files or hierarchical databases you are back to writing a complicated program running over multiple files.
Relational databases were devised to solve these problems. XML, in data management terms is a step back into the dark ages. As an integration tool it is also markedly inferior to many available alternatives.
People who don't like Microsoft should be delighted about their enthusiasm for XML. The XML contingent is probably distracting them from doing the job of data management properly in Longhorn. - Posted by: jorwell Posted on: 02/13/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
