But how much has that 10 years of flawless service cost you in taxes? If you're willing to pay them, and get that level of service, great.

But I don't care all that much if the phone works or not -- most of what the silly thing does is let phone spammers talk to my voicemail. For me, paying phone taxes is a waste of money.

So, how about this -- if the high reliabillity is something you value, keep your traditional landline and go on paying the taxes. But there are people who don't need that kind of reliability and would just as soon not be forced to pay for it.

Lets keep the governments out of VOIP and off of the internet in general -- government "value add" is never worth what they charge for it in taxes.
