You are right, Microsoft stands to lose a lot.
They have spent billions on proprietary Windows platforms with a completely different API. On the other hand, HP, IBM, Sun have been developing open platforms based on the open and free Unix apis. It will be a sinch to switch to Linux and get rid of the Unix R&D costs. They are after all hardware and services companies. They can survive quite well in this world and it is an easy transition because Linux and Unix apis are basically the same. Microsoft on the other hand, can not survive in this environment. They only make money on software, and they are in-compatible with everybody else.
