I think nonz got it right.
The iPod is a portable player first and a periph second. Apple is making their cash from entertainment products and that makes them more of a consumer goods company. MS, on the other hand, makes most of their money from their twin towers which, of course, is IT. If MS made most of it's profit from keyboards and mice, then I'd agree with you.
