Simple... Zero Deployment!
.NET and Java applications require runtimes and application installation. Java applets have versioning issues. AJAX just works on ANY modern browser.
Also no issues with firewalls etc. If I was writing for the coporate intranet .NET or Java would be the go, but to offer a product to the world, AJAX is the only way.
