Why so long...
Popular opinion seems to be that IBM wish to grind SCO into the dust. They want SCO to raise every single objection they can, to deliver through discovery every piece of "evidence" they can.

In the end, IBM wish to utterly refute each and every claim made by SCO in fine details so that any similar claims will never, ever arise again. IBM will gain nothing by ending this early, the few billion it will cost to defeat SCO will be worth it in publicity - heck, who would have thought IBM would be cast as the good guy in a contest over open source!

So far, SCO haven't proven anything to anyone, they won't even follow the court's orders and produce evidence. All indications are they don't have any. Every bit of "evidence" they have shown publicly has been refuted - they even claimed ownership if files written by Linus Torvolds himself.

I imagine whenever the people at IBM are feeling a bit down, they just think of SCO and suddenly their lot seems so much better.
