Progress the good and the bad
Progress is a good database. Ive used it in the past and even developed on its webspeed app server platform. The honest truth is that 4gl coding for business applications and on the web is pretty damn easy compared to writing SQL. With all the whooppe doo about things like Python or Ruby on rails etc, one thing about 4GL is that its a language that reads well without all the crazy syntax in other languages (which is probaly why many of you need a robust flashy editor to program in the first place). PHP folks could improve itself by taking some cues from 4GL.

The big problem with progress is that it kind of closed itself out from a lot of hot technology, because its strong suit is built around character UI. Their marketing and supportive materials sucks. When was the last time you actually saw a "how to book" on developing with Progress, webspeed etc in the local book store, the company has that old staunch IBM attitude about them, and yes their GUI tools are pretty damn pitiful.

I think they're pulling off all these aquisitions recently to fill in all their dead spots. The good is that they are slowly opening the platform up to java and .NET so you can get better UI, GUI on Progress, but its still a bear trying to get info on how to implement all this stuff with Progress, unless you want to fork out a couple grand to take classes. They are pretty naive as to licensing web application server as well. A good database trying to correct mistakes and catch up.
