AMD and Intel both said they were looking to create Hardware Virtualization... How far off that is I don't know but they were talking about it...

I remember thinking it was cool and then seeing XEN which we tried and every time we tried it, it ate the boot block (we used Sarge, SuSE 9.3 and Ubuntu (there were 4 of us trying it and each one of us had the same result)...

Now the fact that hardware methods will be available and XEN doesn't support Windows (not even sure if OS X will work although theoretically it should) means that a lot of people won't consider it over VMWare.
