buzzword compliant, but is it useful?
virtualization is about sharing a presumed expensive resource (a machine) that is underutilized. OK, sounds good. but first: is the machine really expensive? PCs start pretty damn cheap these days, and servers aren't the car-priced items they used to be. further, anyone considering running in a virtual machine should ask whether their workload really is sparse and insensitive to preemption. after all, the whole point of virtualization is to interleave sparse bursts of demand. if bursts coincide, someone goes home unhappy. again, wouldn't you rather drop $3k on a nice server, and not worry about sharing it?

fundamentally, PHB's get excited about virtualization mainly because they think they can get away with fewer boxes. and the boxes are bigger, and that makes them feel more manly. they'll trot out some sort of TCO-based argument, bemoaning the "fact" that lots of servers take lots of effort to manage. but do they? instead of virtualizing, people desiring to reduce TCO should think more about making servers easier to use/manage - more standardized, for instance. use net-booting, auto-provisioning, etc.
