MS cannot match Domino
When migrating from Notes to Exchange for email, large companies typically require 5 to 10 times the number of servers and support staff. The Notes administrators were also administrating applications, which is not handled by the Exchange adminsstrators. Microsoft wants to compete on email because they see a chance to compete, and IBM lets them control the discussion, but...

Many companies are using Notes just for email. They are not receiving full return on their investment. Notes does email, but it is an extension of its ability to fill most business software needs.

"What's still missing is a tool or service that can migrate the Domino application logic. Domino still is an awesome rapid application development tool. There frankly is nothing (like it) on the market."

There is no Microsoft software to do what Notes/Domino does. Exchange can do email. IIS can do web serving. There are no Microsoft tools that can build business applications fast, with integrated email, security, mobile replicas, and much other functionality standard with Notes. Microsoft cannot migrate the applications because they have no software to handle the functionality.

I have seen many proposals for both Notes and Microsoft solutions. Development of globally distributed applications on Notes is typically a single developer working for a few months as one of several projects. The equivalent Microsoft solution requires 6 to 10 developers dedicated for at least 6 months, and the result will be less functional than the Notes solution.

Business changes when taking advantage of Notes' ability to reduce development time, sometimes only minutes from request to production. Not planning a budget and waiting for development means business people request more applications. Needs are filled quickly; that fulfills the dream of most of the companies discussed on ZDNet, and Lotus Notes has been doing it for over a decade.
