Oracle routine gives heavy discounts on the initial license purchase anyway and make a big chunk of long term income from annual maintenance.

So while SUN's "subsidy" is somewhat interesting, the actual impact is probably low. Also, most of the Oracle deployments include options which can end up costing more than the DB CPU licenses. For example, if you the management and tuning packs, security packs, that's a few thousand dollars per CPU. If you deploy RAC or any of the BI stuff, that's 20-40K extra per CPU. Doesn't look like SUN's paying for those. Customers should ask SUN to cover that too! wink
