All of the above excellent arguments concerning searching and privacy should open the eyes of our "leaders." The theme, repeated over and over, is that we are tired of being told that corporate greed is more important than our freedom to interact in private as we see fit, within the boundaries of reasonable law.
It drives me crazy to see ZDNet posting all these stories about how bad file-swapping is but only in context of music and major motion pictures. Nowhere on this website do they decry the swapping of material containing illegal juvenile images (this wording is to get around the filters) or even some really adult material. The latter was featured in a New York Times article on Sunday.
It was interesting to note that those people realize that the files making the rounds sooner or later result in purchases from legitimate sources. They concentrate on commercial competitors that leech and sell copyrighted material, not the pimply-faced teenagers downloading the Paris Hilton video or a TiVo leech of Janet's overexposure. They have embraced new technology and are not afraid of the freebies because they know it comes back with $$$ sooner or later.
P2P swapping is almost like shareware. More often than not, after sampling the material, someone buys the original (if they can find it-indies and older things are hard to find at the major chains).
I tried to find some music today that I could buy for my kid. Except for some Disney (way too low on the age range for her), there wasn't much out there that didn't have a big black and white warning label all over. Luckily she likes classic rock, so Momma may have to do some ripping so she can hear something that doesn't call women rude names. Maybe it is finally time for me to join in and play in the P2P fields of battle... Nah! There ARE other ways... - Posted by: AbsolutelyNot Posted on: 02/10/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
