Music Industry Piracy Investigations == ARIA == RIAA
The story does not make it clear that MIPI is actually a part of ARIA, the Australian Recording Industry Association.

If yeahright and cronies agree with the Sharman Networks case, then I fully expect them to start suing gun manufacturers for every gun death, automobile makers for every car death, airline operators for every single air crash death, etc.

Sometimes there is only a fine line between providing a service that can be used for illegal activity and actually aiding and abetting illegal activity. In this case, I don't think Sharman are at fault. The Dutch court case found Kazza not to infringe copyright, ARIA's US case is in trouble (though not yet lost). There is no point to this raid other than grandstanding by ARIA (read RIAA).

The recording industry knows the power of file sharing for distributing music; they know it could be used to greatly increase music sales (the rise of Napster was paralleled by a rise in music sales, Napster's death brought a decline in sales).

The RIAA's biggest issue is that they can't control the companies that provide P2P. I have no doubt that the RIAA et al will eventually deliver music via file sharing, but only when they have the same total control that they have over radio stations.
