I don't know what you did when installing it, but the Windows version I am using right now has all the things you say your version doesn't.

There are forward and backward buttons (in addition to being able to use Alt+ like other browsers) and there is a bookmark menu in addition to the sidebar. Also, Ctrl+b displays bookmarks in the sidebar.

I have used FireBird for some time on OS X and Windows and find it great. It is a tad buggy on OS X when used for a long time, but a re-launch fixes it. Despite that, I find it better than Safari (which wont let me drag links to existing tabs).

There are lots of skins available, though the stock UI is great. For me, Firefox is great.
