Why does microsoft waste time on such piffle
it seems to me microsoft have wasted a lot of effort in an attempt to defeat ODF with MSXML.
However, MSXML never will defeat ODF since ODF completely describes a physical page layout, whereas MSXML has the style information munged into binary.
And therefore MSXML can never do the same task as ODF can.
Meanwhile, Microsoft have immense challenges:
1. Windows XP is not best of class. OSX is currently (OSX requires far less ongoing maintenance).
2. Xbox has taken considerable investment, and is not best of class. PS2 is currently. Halo2+Xbox live is not best of class, SOCOM seals+PS2 Online is. I personally think microsoft have lost badly with the XBox 360. By the time supplies hit the streets, the PS3 will be out. Halo3 is unlikely to be enough. (spoken as an owner of Halo2 and Xbox live). Everquest is one PS2 now (largest online game in the world I think). Sony are still hard to beat for gaming. The PS2 titles beat down xbox titles despite lighter hardware. And the PS2 range of titles runs on the PS3. Xbox 360 can't even count on all Xbox titles running. Bad mistake I think. In my opinion, Microsoft knew they were going to lose the console fight a little while ago. Maybe they have some backup plan, involving trying to bring Xbox360 technology to internet TV, who knows.
3. Microsoft Office to many people is not best of class: Open Office is. Many people I've spoken to prefer Open Office's GUI. (remember when Star Office GUI was appalling).
4. MSN search is not best of class, google is.

I use Microsoft products a lot, but currently I can't see large future purchases.
*WHY* are microsoft wasting time on issues like MSXML versus ODF. MSXML is inferior, so all the ECMA submission etc is a pathetic waste of time.

Microsoft need to spend more time making their products best of class instead of wasting time like this. There is a lack of good decisions at a higher level I think. In my opinion their engineers are just as good as any other engineers. The problem is the strategic decision making I think (but who am I, I'm not even a millionaire, and the guys at microsoft are billionaires).
