Well Okay
I notice that there will be no more then 10 betas, so in some sense this is p.r. about a future product and I would think huzzahs should be tempered. Of course Microsoft will say this is one more reason to drop "unix" (by which they mean Linux, really). Win32 Python has been available for as long as I've known about Python, and experienced Python programmers have known where the cross-platform dragons reside. So if you're Microsoft, why not do the community a favor and tame the dragons instead of building a new implementation? And the answer has to do with choosing the tactic which yields more income. My point of view is: if, in addition to what could be a useful scripting environment for Windows, Microsoft spends money to ensure 0 cross-platform gotchas and outside scripts run on Windows and Windows originated IronPython scripts run whereever else python runs, then you'll see some migration. After all, Microsoft wrote its own flavor of .net java as well and we know how quickly that converted java developers. Realistically, I expect Microsoft will take the (understandable) point of view that other platforms are others' concerns. And all in all, I see this not as giving people a reason to throw over *nix, but giving Windows consumers one less reason to not pony up for the next product cycle.
