Difference is...
Microsoft *knew* that most Windows XP machines would be connected to the Internet.

Even so, they didn't enable the firewall and they left many ports wide open (in fact you can't ever close things like the RPC port). They also enable file sharing by default (and remember, no firewall!!), etc.

Then they had the gall to tell us it was the "most secure OS ever" at the launch parties.
