Opera is probably 10x more secure than IE, but, MS would do it to eliminate
competition, NOT for the technology. Microsoft would really like to see fewer viable browsers around. The only technology usefull to MS would be the mobile technology to include with CE.

But, the minute that MS bought Opera, most of the users would switch to Firefox.

Buying Opera might make more sense for Google, but, for them, they would rather remain neutral and just help both Opera and Firefox so that it is harder (hopefully imposible) for Microsoft to control the web and eliminate competition.
