Not so straightforward
First, you need to ask the right question. Asking "is taking
something without permission wrong" is not the correct
question here. Nothing is being taken. And there are
circumstances where taking something without permission is a
good thing. When the Allies took Berlin during WWII, that was
probably for the best. But no, they didn't have the owners'
permission.

As for downloading, I don't think it's so black and white. I do
think artists should be compensated for their work. But I don't
think that compensation should last 100 years after they're
dead. They should be paid for selling recordings, yet the RIAA
companies repeatedly have failed to live up to their contracted
terms, so in some ways, downloading is no different to the artist
than buying the cd (remember the Backstreet Boys have received
$0 in cd sale royalty).
So no, I don't do it, but it's a very grey area, and not as neat and
clean as you'd like it to be.
