Several thoughts on this:
1) My cable company is now offering DVR tuners (40GB HD, firewire USB, S-video and analog out ports for transfer to other media from the HD) so I got one to replace my regular digital tuner and the cr@ppy VCR. I haven't tried recording from the music channels or dubbing yet, but you can see where I can conceivably go with this. There are always other options...

2) Raiding the offices of the software company is illegal no matter what law they use. The whole point of non-centralized P2P is that there are no files on a central server or gateway. So if the stated purpose was to find "share" files on the company computers, the police are going to be SOL.

3) The RIAA isn't raiding offices here yet. They prefer to attact individuals with threats and intimidation. Of course, we do have that parking lot raid in California to think about... Scary that you can get jumped on for CD-R media now.

But at the same time, we can buy all sorts of playback equipment (portable players, DVD players, car stereos, etc.) that proudly proclaim that they are CD-R/RW compatible. Now, if you believe the RIAA when they say all the material on a CD-R is illegal, then why in the name of Pete are there so many things you can play the things on? There is a definite sense of schizophrenia here.

In short, the RIAA needs to make up its mind as to what it wants. You want me to buy your product?
a) Obey the courts when they tell you that the pricing is excessive.
b) Provide something I actually want to listen to-release some of the older stuff as it originally existed so that those of us still hoarding vinyl don't have to resort to looking for the material elsewhere.
c) Stop spending your alleged dwindling profits on harassment and put it into developing new artists that have real talent. I know I'm sick of the same five "performers" hogging the charts and airwaves.

As has been asked before, when is the raid on the record companies here? I'd love to see what's in the alternate sets of books!
