Why? SCO's stocks up .... that's the reason
I suspect that after IBM decided to go with Linux last year, instead of collaborating with SCO on a Unix project SCO saw the writing on the walls. Even if, in the increasingly improbable chance, that some Unix code found it's way into Linux; SCO was distributing Linux just last year. So, why would they sue?
With 2/3 of their income from UNIX, they had to do something or perish.
SCO's exit strategy ... sue IBM ...get their stock up... management cashes in. SCO' stocks had gone up over 1000% , though not as high now. I suspect most have cashed in already. The ongoing legal tussle may be a legal long shot at IBM settling, thus scaring everyone else (Hey, you get the giant to back down, everyone else may fall in line).
