Yes, there are some important advantages.

First of all, let it be admitted that the documents which are stored on this sight probably should not be your personal lists of credit card numbers or corporate secrets. Also, most of the advantages this would offer would probably be redundant if one works at a large company, but for a small business or a group of private individuals, this service offers some real opportunities.

For documents which one needs to be mobile (but are probably not worth hacking into), this is a great alternative to storage devices. Either carry everything on a USB drive which you could lose, or on a laptop which could be stolen, or simply access the documents at your destination on a different computer even if your laptop or USB drive was lost or stolen. When you do that, you may find that your partner edited and revised the document while you were in travel. Instead of trying to pick it up as an attachment at Hotmail (which is plgged with spam), open up and print the document at Writely. The documents can be accessed anywhere with web access (which is becoming nearly everywhere anyway).

This also works well for collaberation efforts between people who, again, do not want to use email. For example, I am writing a book with a friend 200 miles away. We can collaborate on chapters or parts of the book at our leisure, then later check on each others' progress. This is far more convenient and efficient than email and attachments.

This is truly a niche' tool that replaces a huge permanent secure corporate server and secure web site for small businesses and collaborations. It has a good place in a very large market. I only hope they can remain marketable, profitable, and free for basic users like me for a very long time.
