What happened with Microsoft Java
Microsoft did a few things thatwere licence violations with their implementation of java. These included alteration of some of the libraries in a non-portable manner, their JVM had no safety mechanism (sandbox) so it could make direct calls to the system (same as ActiveX, which spawned a tool called Exploder that allowed the formatting of a users disk), ...

For what it is worth, IBM did a good job on their JVM/JDK implementation, as did Blackdown and many others! None of these companies/organizations altered the libraries in a proprietary manner as Microsoft did!

I am sure that the isuue of conmpetition will come up, so here is the deal: Java apps writen to be compliant with the specification are supposed to be portable, just as (the original implemantaion and v.2, v.2.3 and v.4 of) HTML and XHTML. This is a threat to the desktop that Microsoft controls.

I was at a Microsoft developper conference in '95 when they said (in one of the sessions) that they had altered some of the library calls and the sandbox safety system.
