I suggest you read The Selling of Sickness, a book out of Austrailia which is about the drug industry. Many do not realize that before Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft they studied and considered getting into the drug business.

The book describes the term AustroTurfing as the portrayal of something as a grassroots effort when it is actually public relations and to often wrong doing.

This Lincoln Group was hired by the US Military to make it appear there is grass roots support for US presence in IRAQ. Such firms, according to the book, are will represented on the east coast of the US and usually consist of a lot of legally trained folks who today start web sites, purchase search engines and pay for content on shows like Rush Limbaugh and on web sites. I think a good counter to this would be a requirment that consumers be notified when such firms are utilized and to promote firms like Google and Sun which were founded on the west coast as Stanford University projects and suscribe to the principle of doing no evil.
