People use Windows and IE because it's easy
I know very few people who would be able to get the same enjoyment from Linux that they get from MS products. They don't want to know enough about things to use Linux to it's full extent.

Telling them not to use Windows/IE is fine but you should also be ready to tell them how to use whatever you're advocating and be willing to answer their phone calls when they blow up their video settings and now it's all black.

Linux is not ready for the new user market and when someone makes it ready, it will have all the proprietary/intellectual property of Microsoft products. Did someone say SCO?

Oh, and Star Office sucks as does Corel WordPerfect.

Just point them to some useful tools and be helpful.
