Impractical for the main victims
Good corporate net admins can nip these programs in the bud with the right policies and computer savvy home users can block such malware even if they're using Windows and IE. It's the non-technical home user who wants to play games, surf, let the kids do homework and so forth who're the most common victims of these programs. They don't have the technical skill or inclination to deal with Linux (Walmart found that low end Linux systems were a non-starter). They realize that the games, school, work or other programs aren't available for the Mac and that Macs cost a lot more than comparable Windows systems.

The best thing we can do is encourage them if they're going to stick with Windows that they should use the right programs, trusted programs, to secure their systems. For the long term Microsoft needs serious competition for the home desktop. Even if one likes Microsoft, they should understand that competition will cause them to create a better product.
