(in fact, anyone who's had a "Bill meeting" will tell you that rewarding, or even smiling at, employees is not a matter of Microsoft policy

I decided I couldn't let this comment slide either. Very few of Microsoft's 50K employees have ever had a "Bill Meeting" those are pretty much strictly reserved for VP's and PUM's--and yes, they're brutal from what I understand. But frankly, I'm not sure there are any executive style meetings that aren't brutal at any largh Fortune 500 company--brutality at that level is commonplace.

As far as working at Microsoft from a bottom feeder former employees perspective? It's a challenging, driven, high-stress, long hours, yet rewarding experience. As employees I feel we were treated very well, perhaps even coddled at times. MS does do what it needs to inspire their employees to get the job done (hence the long hours that no one complains about), but they also reward them healthily when all is said and done too. Don't get me wrong, working at MS isn't all a bed of roses either because if it were, I'd still be there.
