Right numbers

I just looked up MS's balance sheet for the quarter ended June 30 of 2003; assets are listed at $79,571,000,000 (cash and near-cash being about $48B of that). Liabilities are listed at $18,551,000,000, so the stockholder equity in the company is $61,020,000,000. If you get rid of "goodwill" and other intangible assets, you are at $57,508,000,000 in tangible equity.

Let's at least all use the right #'s. This is just their break-up value (nothing notional about it); in fact, if you were to liquidate them, you would get more, because they are worth more than the sum of their assets (given that they are a going concern making heaps of money each year).

Oh, and, duh, 100% of the company is HELD IN SHARES. That's how it works.
