The switch cost question
Maybe the initial cost is higher but in the long run must be a lot cheaper than M$ per seat cost.

I would dispute that it costs more, short or long term. Skewing the assumptions, I can make the cost benefit come out in any direction I want. But taking a look at the numbers from actual transitions, it's hard to find one that really cost more unless it was managed by MCSE's.

Yes, I think if you look at all your critical apps and lay down a hard and fast rule that every single one has to be translated over to Linux and be fully operational just like Windows, then heck yes it's going to cost more. And a lot more at that. But if you've already started moving your critical apps to web-based alternatives like you should have started three years ago, then your transition will be relatively painless.

The transition from Office to OOo is completely painless. There are no massive re-training costs as MSFT claims and there has never been an Office upgrade in the history of time that hasn't needed traning costs. A cheat sheet with the top 10 most frequent tasks is all that's really needed.

I swap word docs with Windows shops all the time. Sometimes the formatting is off a little but we manage to do business.
