What Microsoft has to say is sometimes helpful
Thank you for the supportive link, BOFH. Nothing hurts a Microsoft fan more than when Microsoft tells them they're wrong. I laid the trap and you sprung it. Good job!

I would have posted what Microsoft says in their FAQ though - stripped of Microsoft backscratching by yours truly (parenthetical comments are mine):

Q. How will the file format be different from the XML file formats used in Microsoft Office 2003?

A. The new file formats differ from the current Office 2003 XML Reference Schemas in two ways:
? XML files are ZIP compressed to reduce document sizes (Whoa! Didn't OpenOffice innovate ZIPping the XML first?)
? Data within a document, for example: comments, charts, images, document metadata, is segmented and stored in different components with the file. (As I said, a different schema and packaging scheme.)

Of course a FAQ is just marketing material, rather than a technical comparison, but does support my claim that Office 12 formats are not what No_Axe has been using for the last two years.

Thank you again.
