MS had Windows NT for Alpha, MIPS, and PowerPC back at 4.0. They deprecated those branches because they saw no future for the architectures (in their market).

Windows had Itanium support when the Itanium was released.

The Opteron hasn't been available for even a year yet. The Athlon 64 hasn't even been available for 6 months!

I'm very impressed with how well Microsoft ported their OS.
I expect the final version to have .Net Framework support but other than that I've had no problems at all, aside from driver availability.

Linux has seen similar problems... While Developer/Enthusiast-friendly companies like Nvidia have Linux AMD64 drivers (and have since 5 months before Opteron's launch)... Slow, narrow-minded companies like ATI haven't even hinted at 64-bit support. Let alone Linux 64-bit support.


By the time Linux 2.6 becomes mainstream, Windows XP and 2003 for x86-64 will be available.
