No, Linux is not "doomed" on the desktop
I believe it will be slow to catch on with the consumer market, because the infrastructure is not in place, and I don't see much incentive to build it. Am OS is an OS, nobody much cares. You make mention of mindshare and we see Microsoft working to build it with "Great moments in the office," and personally I think there will be payoff; the mindshare potential is there.

In the enterprise, it's a different story, and my very large organization is taking a close look at it right now. The concern is the cost of operation; simply this, we are now in a position where we have to maintain two sets of expertise and support - one for the server, one for the desktop. The cost of this redundancy is not nearly as low as Redmond would have you think; recurring costs are dominant in TCO. In the world of several years back, with a heavy investment in client-server and client-only systems, there were no alternatives; actually, there was no other viable desktop OS. But now that there are alternatives, with no hard feelings, the move is in the realm of possibility.

I remain convinced that the home user will not begin to move until after business.
