Don't jump too fast now..
"And exactly how does that differ from IBM "appropriating" Java and Linux for its own benefit? Since IBM isn't in the software business, it is making use of what is freely available to sell its hardware. Why is that any better?"

It is not, of course. But no other company will ever be in the position to abuse its status the way Microsoft has. That is why people harp on M$ more than the others. If IBM had 90% market share in the PC world, and it was breaking every law in creation, then IBM would be receiving the exact same wrath that M$ does. I don't necessarily want to see M$ fall off the earth, I just want to see an exciting competitive industry where companies compete on their merits and not by deliberately making incompatible software.
BTW Carl, do you EVER make posts of your own, or do you always sit on the sidelines watching people duke it out only to poke your nose in at the end to throw in your own two cents? For someone who is so big on credibility, you have to realize that by only responding to posts after the arguing is pretty much done, that people will not take you that seriously..
