It's always a balance...
If you can't profit from your business activities, then you're not a business; but the idea behind open standards is to benefit the industry as a whole by making it easier for different vendors to create interoperable products, thus making it easier for everyone to make money.

The reason behind MS' efforts to patent their XML schema appears to be a continuation of their usual strategy of strategic incompatibility in the interest of maintaining market share, while attempting to save time and effort by using open standards other people developed. That's not about balance; that's about trying to derive maximum benefit from the status quo (for themselves, not their customers).
