So the ODF isn't free after all. You have to belong just like XML. Every scheme has a condition.

I really don't know where you get this. ODF, like XML, like HTML, like TCP/IP ... like metric units.

They're all public specifications with no strings attached to their use. No membership required.

You have to use GPL code to write to the ODF format.

Again, not true. Utterly baseless. About as true as claiming that can't write English without paying royalties to the the publishers of Webster's Dictionary.

I am, of course, willing to be persuaded otherwise. A reference to any OASIS document (e.g. the preface to the ODF spec) will do nicely.

MS doesn't use GPL code.
