Improvement (?): I guess it depends on what you consider an improvement. Here is the "standard" dilemna from where we (as a software house) sit:

1) If there is a standard that allows software to interoperate we use it.

2) If a "standard" prohibits this interoperability we won't use it.

This is where the standardize->extend->proprietarization kicks in:

1. If Open XML is ratified as a standard I think that is great, because it means we can write software that will work with Office products, and vice versa.

2. But, IF MS continues is prior practices, they will extend the standard so that the interoperability only exists for MS products.
