Not quite dead
I don't know that I'd declare it dead, the RIAA companies still
make billions of dollars from cd sales every year. Also, until
downloads start coming in higher fidelity, many will not go for
low bandwidth mp3 rips. Not to mention availability of artwork,
artist credits, lyrics and such. But those things could also be
downloadable (as could higher quality aiff files, given more
bandwidth).

Also note that humans have always made music, and will always
continue to do so. Musicians may just go back to more
traditional ways of making a living, being paid for performing,
rather than trying to live off of royalties from a single recorded
performance.
