Extraordinary, really
The RIAA successfully prosecutes companies that produce file sharing software on the basis that it is primarily used for illegal purposes, i.e. swapping copyrighted material. The principle being that more harm is caused by the file swapping than the harm to free speech by banning P2P networks and software.

The actual damage done to the recording industry is perhaps a few billion in sales, but then again, it probably also promotes the distribution of music and most likely promotes sales too - but the RIAA wont admit to that.

On the other hand, the US has virtually free and unfettered use of hand guns. The sole purpose for most of these guns is to kill people, and many of them do. Yet it is considered better to have thousands of gun deaths each year than impinge on a citizen's "right to bear arms".

Why aren't these same do-gooders out there trying to stop gun companies from selling hand guns? Is the right to bear arms so important that thousands need to die each year "defending" it?

Or maybe the right to control music distribution really is more important than the right to life.
