Education!!!
Scenario 1.

A non technical person (CEO, lawyer, MD, DDS, secretary, accountant, clerk, homebody, teenager, politician, etc.) goes to the local box store or responds to a flyer in the Sunday paper and buys a computer. They don't know much (read "anything") about it except that somebody who knows somebody that knows sombody said its the way to go. "Get a computer and go on line and start emailing all your friends!" The words "spam", "virus", "worm" and "patch" as they relate to computers are totally foreign to these users.

Scenario 2.

A well meaning individual has just upgraded to a new computer. What to do with the old box? Give it to a relative back home so that they too can get on line and communicate without paper, pen, stamps and trips to a mailbox. The person receiving the computer doesn't know much (read "anything") about it except that the giver said its the way to go. "Get a computer and go on line and start emailing all your friends!" The words "spam", "virus", "worm" and "patch" as they relate to computers are totally foreign to these users.

In both scenarios, all of those computers are probably running some version of Windows. That version of Windows has in all probability never seen the light of Windows Update, in spite of the link being available at the click of a mouse button on the Start button.

In both scenarios, all of those users have in all probability never seen the light of Windows Update, in spite of the link being available at the click of a mouse button on the Start button. Those users are in all probability not on Microsoft's list of subscribers to its security updates and thet probably are not aware of this web site (ZDNet) and its counterparts.

Draw your own conclusions.
