At least in OSX
Whilke I haven't played in Linux in some time, I do use OSX.
As I remember the permissions are pretty similar.

In OSX, every time somebody with administrative privileges
goes to install anything on the hard drive, they're hit with a
password screen. That's the default setting. It would at
least warn somebody that they're about to install something
they didn't epect to install on the hard drive.

If a user does not have administrator priveleges, he/she can
only put stuff in their user folder. They would again be hit
with a password screen, indicating that they're about to do
something they didn't mean to do.

They're the default settings. Users can be further restricted
if you wish. Mac Classic, since 8, also had similar
protections built in, if you used the Multiple Users control
panel. That was put there so kids couldn't fouls up school
computers too much.
