Another other way to think of the situation
From Kitty Hawk to Comet - huge technical leap forward; huge new potential for travel.

From Comet to Boeing 747 - significant technical improvements; significant potential for more to travel.

From Altair 8800 to Lotus 123 version 4 - huge technical leap forward; huge new potential for automated processes.

From Lotus 123 to Office suites - huge technical improvements; same paper oriented methods of working.

Presumably air travel prospered because of a change in consumer demand - package holidays, conferences and so on - leading to better aeroplanes. But in IT few have suggested similar changes in methods of working that would demand a different approach to software. If, for example, information itself was reprocessed to be object
oriented, then there would be new demands for technological innovation to automate it.
