Microsoft can employ a simple solution
All Microsoft needs to do is charge a FAIR price for software. Forget the ads .. no-one wants that , forget the Web as a primary source because that is the start of a new chargeout model anyway .. i.e drip feed the market , capture the market then charge like wounded bulls for any changes. We all need to own a licensed operating CD (backup , rebuild , restore - remember failures always happen) and maybe at least Office so if Microsoft sold them for $100 each they would have a known revenue stream and a reliable database of users/clients to work with. That's a valuable resource. Now they get one licence in 100 users (99 being pirated or duplicated) so I reckon they are better off getting the reverse 99 x $100 rather than 1 x $600 . Also people will buy software that is proven to be tight well thought out , fully tested , bug free code that only fails in the most unusual of circumstances. How end users have tolerated second rate coding techniques and failures this long is surprising to me. For example users should NOT have to clean out temporary files .. the system should do that automatically . Also file versions should be checked against a known database. Users should be able to do a system scan against current file size , dates and checksums on the web and do a repair , fix to ensure that errors do not occur. These are services Microsoft seems unwilling or incapable of implementing. They also ignore and fail to support small IT dealers and that as much as anything will be their undoing because those people influence street talk. And we all know what street talk can do. The current generation likes , looks at and believes 'reality TV' so it gives you a good insight into the minds (loose description I know) of what you are selling to.
